Torbay Knee Surgeon is an educational resource provided by two consultant orthopaedic surgeons working at Mount Stuart Hospital, and Torbay Hospital NHS foundation trust. This site contains many downloadable information sheets and links to orthopaedic resources.
Mr David Isaac MBBS BSc(Hons) MS(Lond) FRCSEd(Tr & Orth) PGDip(Tr & Orth)
Mr David Isaac is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon based at Torbay Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and at Mount Stuart Hospital, Torbay. His field is principally in knee surgery and hip replacement surgery, with a specialist interest in knee injuries and primary and revision knee replacement surgery including the use of the Oxford unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement.
He graduated from London University, and trained in South East England. He undertook a period of research at Oxford University into knee ligament injuries, and completed his training in Auckland, New Zealand, working with the surgical team responsible for the treatment of many of the All Blacks injuries. Here, he gained extensive experience in the management of knee conditions, and further training in orthopaedic trauma with an internationally respected trauma specialist. Following this, Mr Isaac undertook a specialist fellowship in Oxford, in the field of hip and knee replacement surgery.
Mr Isaac has several areas of research interest, including the accelerated rehabilitation of patients after joint replacement surgery. He has a special clinical interest in the use of the Oxford Unicompartmental Knee replacement, and in the management of cartilage and ligament injuries.
Mr Michael Hockings MBChB, MSc (Orth. Eng.), FRCS (Tr. & Ortho.)
Mr Michael Hockings qualified from St Andrews and Manchester medical schools in 1992. He went on to complete specialised training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Manchester. He finished his training at the Orthopaedic & Arthritic Institute, affiliated to Sunnybrook Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada from 2002 to 2003. During this 12 months he specialised in complex knee and hip replacement and knee ligament surgery. He was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Torbay Hospital in 2003.
He routinely performs primary hip, knee replacements and complex knee surgery including partial joint replacements, patella replacement, ligament reconstructions, arthroscopic cartilage repair and realignment osteotomies. He has a special interest in minimally invasive and computer aided knee replacement.
He has recently been appointed on the Intercollegiate Specialty Board of examiners for Trauma and Orthopaedics in the UK. He is involved in training, audit and research and has published papers in the field of knee surgery.
